PLEASE KEEP INFORMED ON THE UPCOMING STORM WITH THE  NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE.

THE VILLAGE OF MASTIC BEACH RECOMMENDS EVERY CITIZEN HAVE A 5-7 DAY SUPPLY OF NON-PERISHABLE FOOD AND WATER.

PREPARING FOR THE STORM

  1. Turn on TV or radio and listen for continuing updates.
  2. Review your evacuation plans if you live in an evacuation area. Remember, not everyone needs to evacuate or relocate.
  3. Check evacuation kit and/or family disaster supplies kit and gather missing items.
  4. Contact family members to coordinate storm preparations.
  5. Notify out-of-area contact if planning to evacuate and relocate to a site out of the flood zone.
  6. Place important documents—insurance policies, birth certificates and photos—in waterproof plastic bags.
  7. Turn refrigerator and freezer to coldest settings; open only when necessary, and close quickly.
  8. Thoroughly clean plastic jugs or cartons and freeze water in them.
  9. Fill up water bottles and other drinking water containers.
  10. Scrub bathtub and fill with water; keep a bucket handy for flushing toilet.
  11. Prepare and test generator, if available. (Do not operate during storm)
  12. Fuel up vehicles and propane tanks; obtain fuel for generators.
  13. Stow or cover irreplaceable items; move breakables away from windows.
  14. Put up shutters if you have them. If not, place plywood over windows to protect them from wind and debris.
  15. Bring in outdoor furniture, landscape ornaments, lawn equipment, wind chimes, flags, trash cans. Anchor grills, antennas, and other items that may be easily carried away by hurricane winds.
  16. Tie down or stabilize boat (check with U.S. Coast Guard for best methods of mooring). Bring light weight boats such as canoes, kayaks, and their equipment indoors.
  17. Secure outdoor gates.
  18. Reinforce garage door.
  19. Charge cell phone batteries (have a fully charged backup cell battery).
  20. Check all battery-operated smoke detectors and install new fully charged batteries. 

IN CASE OF EVACUATION PACK A “GO-BAG.”

Every household should consider assembling a Go-Bag. This is a collection of items you may need in the event of an evacuation. Each household member’sGo-Bag should be packed in a sturdy, easy-to-carry container, such as a backpack or suitcase on wheels. A Go-Bag should be easily accessible should you have to leave your home in a hurry.

What to have in your bag:

  1. Copies of important documents in a water-tight plastic bag ( i.e. photo ID, emergency directory, insurance polcies, etc.)
  2. Extra set of car and house keys.
  3. Adequate cash (including change) for your emergency needs.
  4. Bottled water and non-perishable food such as energy or granola bars.
  5. Flashlight, battery-operated AM/FM radio, and extra batteries.
  6. Medication for at least one week and other essential personal items. Keep a list of the medications each member of your household takes, their dosages or copies of all prescription slips, and your doctor’s name and telephone number.
  7. Sturdy, comfortable, waterproof shoes, and lightweight rain gear.
  8. Contact and meeting place information for your household.
  9. Child care supplies or other special items.
  10. Paper plates, plastic drinking cups, and plastic eating utensils.
  11. First-Aid Kit (fully stocked).
  12. Two days’ worth clothing.
  13. Pet care supplies (food, medications, and feeding bowls).

To report downed wires or power outages, DO NOT TOUCH DOWNED WIRES. Customers should call PSEG Long Island’s Customer Service line immediately at 800-490-0075.

Customers with a handheld device can also report power outages by texting “OUT” to PSEGLI (773454) after enrolling in this service. To enroll, customers should have their account number available and text REG to PSEGLI (773454).

GAS EMERGENCY: National Grid asks that you be on high alert for gas service interruptions caused by severe flooding. If you smell natural gas, contact us as soon as possible by calling 911 or 800-490-0045.

If you do not smell natural gas,  have no gas service or need to report a gas problem, call us at 800-930-5003.
